Upcoming Nebula Awards!

Hello writers, readers, imaginers and otherwise awesome individuals!

You know how sometimes you buy a new sci-fi book or grab the latest fantasy series from the local library and there’s this big stamp in the corner that says Nebula Nominee or Nebula Winner? (Check out the classic science fiction book Ender’s Game that I recently reviewed…it had one!)

Well, it never occurred to me until now, though I know it should have; that award has to be given somewhere!

And in fact, the 47th Nebula Awards Weekend is coming up on May 17-20, 2012! (Thursday through Sunday). It’s being held in Arlington, Virginia at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City and ANYONE can register to attend. Wow, could there be any better way to network with authors, agents and publishers!?

This is a huge weekend. There is a banquet, loads of workshops and classes given by extraordinarily talented writers, tours, book signings and even (I hear) a scotch tasting…yum! 😉

Now this isn’t a free event. If it were, it would be overflowing before any non-locals got there! If you are a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) then registration is $50.00. If you’re not a member, registration is $60.00. These prices are only accurate until February 29, 2012. As the date draws closer, registration prices will go up (scroll to the bottom of the page for more info). The banquet is an additional $75.00. The Hyatt Regency hotel is giving participants a special rate of $109 per night plus tax, but make your reservations early!

So let’s do the math…if you can drive to Arlington (I live in Kentucky and I’m driving!) you can attend this really prestigious awards weekend for (120 x 3)+60+75 = $495 plus gas and food. That looks like a big number, but I have come across a LOT of authors who have paid more to promote their work. And especially if you’re a fantasy or sci-fi writer…think how many agents, publishers, and knowledgeable authors you could network with there!

So…here are some important dates you should know.

February 28, 2012: Last day to register for the Nebula Awards Weekend for $60.

March 31, 2012: Last day to register for the Nebula Awards Weekend before the next price increase.

April 30, 2012: Last day to register for the Nebula Awards Weekend before the final price increase.

May 10, 2012: Last day to register for the Nebula Awards Weekend before the at-con rate; Full Weekend and Saturday Evening Banquet memberships may no longer be available after this date.

There are far too many tours, workshops, receptions, and other events for me to list here, but I strongly recommend you CHECK OUT THIS SITE to find details about the weekend and register. I just registered and I really can’t stress how much of a great opportunity this is for up and coming authors, especially those who write fantasy or science fiction. After all, if you’re going to chase your dream, you might as well do it right! 🙂

Nice to know that’s open to anyone! I won’t be attending this year, but it might be good to consider in the future. That’s not too far from where I am, relatively speaking.

That was my thinking Stephanie! I always assumed things like this were only available to agents, publishers, famous authors or authors being nominated. When I realized that I could go, the idea just kept sounding better and better until I finally registered…what a place to start networking! 🙂

Leave our authors some love...
